Gus's Barn
Note says Gus's first barn, 1909, 30 ft by 30 ft, house to the right, so this must be the south side. The house front door faced south. The barn was north and west of the first cabin, both located near the south line about middle of the south east 40.

Happy Holidays
I wish you all a merry Christmas
and a happy new year,
and to you non Christians,
I wish you whatever would be appropriate,
for your persuasion.
For the early Stoics,
happy Saturnalia;
for the Greco-Roman Stoics,
I wish you well in the upcoming year,
for the Newstoa,
we do not have a official greeting other than hello,
but we do not care much as you: time and
Christmas are beyond our control and influence.
To the Yetish, happy Hauanka,
and to the Yetties, stay away from me, I have a camera.
To the Druidry it was Winter Solstice,
to the Neodruidit,
have another beer and keep on not paying taxes.
To the oilies, and antiTrudeaus
Winter is here. May you freeze in the dark, you eastern B____s!!
Most religions and cultures have some kind of seasonal shortest day year ,
days start to get longer type of celebration.
Here is to whatever you call it.
Now I will be off to join a different circus.

JA Meilicke and 52
In this picture JA stands by Arthur's 1952 Ford Pickup. I beleive it was a 1952. It had the front grill with the three lobes, but I recall the center lobe sticking out more than the other two. Leaky carbon based memory. The picture was taken west of the house, looking north west. The compression braced gate post to the pond garden/potato patch is visible. The main garden was on the south facing hill behind the spruce tree.
Grandpaw never did button his sweaters all the way down, even when they had buttons. But he must have, to lose the buttons.

Self, Spring 1955
Myers Cable tool drilling rig is in the background. The well on NW 3 58 8 W5 was drilled in the spring of 1955 to 305 feet, cased to 283 feet, water rose to about 60, the piston sat at about 77 feet, and had another 20 feet of lead. This dates the picture. I spent several days watching the rods go up and down, up and down. It produce good soft water at greater than 4 gallons per minute.
I recall the water test being sent in, in a quart cellar, and Mr. Myers bringing the results, the water is safe to drink, somewhat later. In the fall of 1955, I went to school and met Wayne Myers, the nephew of the driller.
The rig had a rod rocker that turned the rod a quarter of a turn per stroke. It broke and came down and got Mr Myers on the wrist, and broke the crystal on this watch. At lunch mother put it in the top shelf, where it would be safe, and manual rod rocking was done for the remainder of the day. Why should I remember such details.
Now note the three buckle rubber boots, designed for kids with chicken legs. I never could do up the top buckles.
The girl must be my older sister.
Also in the background is the team team, Fanny, the gray, and Dolly, the bay with a blaze. Fanny was fathers first foal, borne on SE 10 58 8 W5 in 1932, the first year he had the farm. There is a bit of the chicken coup on the left, and the chop granary and pig feeder on the rear right. It was the veranda of fathers first house that had been on the SE 10. Father sold the house off SE10 so he could buy NW 3.

Round robin letter, will soon start again
Hello Cousins, and like:
First please note the new address. We have
not moved. The government, in their infinite wisdom, has provided us with a new
address. The address is totally logical, but in order to understand the logic,
you need the key to unlock the logic, which is not available to the public in
an understandable form, and the front part, 5010, has different cardinal logic
from the remainder, but those of you in the USA do not have this government
issue.
The round robin letter seems to have died,
lost, strayed, stolen, been abandoned, left on a hillside in a rainstorm, left in the bottom of a letter carriers bag, lost in a
custody battle or some such fight. This is a restart of it, but I have taken
the liberty of resorting the order, so that it passes in our local group communications
circle without reaching us, so that it may be better tracked.
In August, 2013, we were part of Albert
& Mary fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration in Sherwood Park, Alberta, a suburb
of Edmonton. I am still searching for words to describe the incredible event. I
had the opportunity to see and speak with relatives I have not encountered for
45 years, and met new relatives, both young and old.
This is the first family event, as an
adult, that I had time to sit and observe the diverse range of personalities, behaviors,
attitudes, political views, and histories. I am old enough now, to understand
some of the behaviors. This was the first non-funeral event since Kenneth’s
wedding that I have been at, but there were others- a dinner at Norma’s April
10, 2004 more or less. The family celebration (as opposed to routine) attitude
toward food is, well, obeseogenic, but then I have food issues. I only noticed
two nipping on pocket flasks, or should I say purse flask, but then I am not judging.
There was only one that I knew from
elsewhere that had married a young relative that I had not previously met. Reminds me of a Corb Lund song.
Now I know that mother, Alberta, kept in
touch with the extended family on both sides, but I am not a natural writer,
but struggle with word and concepts to release. I grew up in a house where communication was spared,
silence was the norm, and I thought that was "normal". Admitting a wrong or error
was a seen as weakness. Pre-planning and communicating that plan was loss of
control, precious control must be maintained. The irony of all that is my
parents only had the illusion of control.
My parents did not have the patience to
explain anything, let alone the relationship of all these people to us. Nothing
was written or available to us younger generation. It was treated like state
secrets. In reality mother was so deaf she could not hear anything, so any
question answered what she thought was asked, confusion was the rule. She
could not admit she could not hear. She was too stubborn to get a hearing aid,
and her money was more important than being able to hear. Write was all she
would do and then only to others, not her immediate family. I see my sister
has similar characteristics.
For the above reasons, I have started a
web site to put family information out to the public and relatives. Any may
read, comment, and if you wish, I will put you on as an author.
As I will hang this, as a post, who wants
vegetables? I have excess potatoes, carrots, and beets, Kale, cabbage (with added
proteins), and a few cucumbers going fast.

JA & GE Meilicke homestead c-1911
This picture has shown up before, but this is a better copy.
http://meilickeancestors.blogspot.ca/2012/11/gustav-e-meilicke-draft.html
It is printed as a postcard, a common practice of the time. This originally said 1920, but may have been earlier. Note the axe sharpening stone with hand crank.
The back says c- 1911 Meadows, neighbors. Note that JA like to get into the pictures a bit. Could this mean the Gus had the camera?
Note the barn in the background. I have seen another picture of this barn, but could not locate it today. Some damage on the print. These two are contact prints.
JA and a thrashing machine. Could this be the Red River? of http://meilickeancestors.blogspot.ca/2013/04/artefact-little-level.html
