Ancestors exidous

Gustav Meilicke was born March 19, 1851, Frankfurt on the Oder river, east of the river, in what is Poland today. We are not German, we are Polish. That explains a lot. Gustav married to Mathilda Schallert, date______. That name shows up again later. They left Prussia in 1880, with children, Mary, Louise, Frederick G, and came to Iowa or Wisconsin? After they settled in Dallas County, Iowa, they had Gustav Eberhardt., Julius Albert, William Carl, Adolph H. (Ed), and Samual Tilden.  Dallas County--->    https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Dallas+County,+Iowa,+United+States&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.992289,57.304687&oq=Dallas+County,+Iowa+&hnear=Dallas,+Iowa&t=m&z=9

What was going on in the Province (or State) of Brandenburg, Prussia.

In 1657, after an invasion by the Swedes, Poland surrendered sovereignty over Ducal Prussia which then became the Kingdom of Prussia headed by the Hohenzollern line. Prussia's power grew and in 1772, under King Friedrich II (Frederick the Great), consisted of the provinces of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Danzig, West Prussia and East Prussia (modern day East Germany, northern Poland, and a small portion of the Soviet Union).

A major event in German history was the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, making Germany a world power. It was during this war that, in 1870, Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck orchestrated the unification of the German states.
The German Empire was established under Prussian leadership with Bismarck as Chancellor. Wilhelm II, the last of the Hohenzollern dynasty, became Emperor of Germany (Kaiser) in 1888 and ruled until Germany's defeat in World War I. (ref http://www.kolpack.com/packnet/prussia.html)

Prussia was in a state of political turmoil. Frankfurt on the Oder is located at https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Frankfurt+an+der+Oder,+Germany&hl=en&ll=52.342891,14.537659&spn=0.332241,0.88028&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=27.643082,56.337891&oq=frankfurt+&t=m&hnear=Frankfurt,+Brandenburg,+Germany&z=10 but this Frankfurt was on both sides of the river, and Gustav was from east of the river.

Extended Family

"Rant warning --- Thinking warning." The easily offended should leave now.

Not knowing the extended family on my fathers side got me thinking about that attitude, how it developed, and whether I still hold it unintentionally, or if I would like to know all of my extended family.

Extended family has been a common characteristics of tribal cultures, European and Irish cultures as far back as the records go. Civilization has been organized along family for the purpose of raising children for ions of time, but what has happened to the last generations of some families, and how has that effected me?

There have been issues, whether it is one brother taking advantage of other, and a dispute that sees 45 years of not speaking, and then a casual meeting, and not much said, never to speak to each other again. That soured not just one generation but two on the value of family. The second generation was soured by the remarks, and the continual criticism that I endured at the hands of my parents, especially my father. That was my reality.

Family is only valuable when it benefits both sides of the relationship, in some way. Friendly people, ok. Being the brunt of jokes, the one being criticise, is not fun. Then family has little importance. That was likely at the heart of my insular movement, the fearful/ignore approach of society, as a whole. Now I understand, and have stopped caring about many things, and am re-evaluating my relationships with everyone, and everthing.

Religion and politics are both decisive. "You are wrong, I am right" is a common view of most religious groups, will be ultimately denied, but it shows in the efforts to convert. Until that concept is given up, the best we can hope for is peaceful co-existence. Good luck with that. Until we understand and accept that others can believe what ever they want, without caring if it is right or wrong, there will be little progress toward family peace, or world piece for that matter. There is room for a "Vulcan like" pure logic movement.

Anyways, where does all this leave me, us. Trying to understand the past, with the hope that there is a better future, but not having clear understanding of how to get there or what it will look like. It is just my first time through life and I made decisions, some known, some right, some wrong, but survived. We only talk to the survivors.

End of rant.

Helen

Jane Mitchell ,the daughter of Ellen Tully Brownrigg, my fathers sister, called this AM to say Helen Waddell (83) died. October 5, 2012. She was my oldest cousin, I am the youngest cousin, of which I have only met 2, Jane and Evelyn  I am not sure who some of those other are, nor of there names. I am not even sure of Helens name, but she was Henry's daughter, or was she Tom's? Not George, Ellen and Evelyn or is that not right ether?   Yes Tom's sounds better. I do not know.

That is one of the issues of us low social introverts. To busy working.

Pam

In searching the net I found a link and chased it. Here is here web site http://www.blaines.us/PamyPlace.htm This is what resulted:

I remember when I transcribed the diary but I didn't remember if I ever got it to any of the Meilickes.  I may have sent it to Mildred.  She is the only one that I knew.  I always hoped to get it to more Meilickes because I think it's a treasure to have that history.  I would love to know more about the family tree that you mention.

Sam Meilicke was the only grandfather I had as I grew up and at that time he had a couple of brothers still living around here.  Although, he was my grandfather by adoption, it felt like blood to me.  I didn't really know the difference back then.  Mom told me a lot about Grandma & Grandpa Meilicke (Mathilde & Gustav).  They are buried in Linville Cemetery near where I live.

My Mother spent many years growing up on the Meilicke farm near Greensburg, Mo.  Someone from the Meilicke family, I can't think of the name right now, came to my Mom's sale.  I pointed out to him a ceramic chamber pot that Mom told me belonged to Grandma Meilicke and I was glad that he took it home with him.  We had a good laugh over him owning the Meilicke chamber pot. Was that you?  It seems like I have talked to you before maybe?  You'll have to refresh my memory.

I would be interested in knowing more about the Meilickes.  Again, I'm so glad to hear from you!

Samuel Meilicke

Samuel Meilicke married ________ Morganthaler. No other information

That is the first like in what I believe is a copy of a family tree titled "Decendants of Gustave Eduard and Theresa Luther Meilicke" of the family tree that JA put together about 1963 or so.

I remember seeing portions of this, but mother kept everything away, and made it difficult to care about history. Anyone who would like a pdf copy, please request at fredtully at shaw dot ca.

This document show the relationships to many relatives. This Samuel is the grandfather of Julius Albert (JA)
